The famous Waterfalls Trail has some of the most spectacular waterfall and woodland scenery in the North of England. the trail is 4.5 miles/8 kilometres through ancient oak woodland and magnificent Dales scenery via a series of spectacular waterfalls and geological features.
With rare and interesting plants and animals and its importance as a geological site much of the Waterfalls Trail has been designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) by English Nature

dales national park. The web cam has been in operation for just over
4 years and has received over 100.000 visitors.

The CRO was originally formed in 1935 and has grown and developed over the years into the efficient organisation that it is today. By the year 2000 the CRO had attended 1756 incidents, including 605 cave and mine, 569 mountain and fell, 73 climbing, and 354 animal rescues (233 of which were from caves and potholes). During this period, 2654 people aged between 5 months and 87 years were given assistance.

The BCEU is the dedicated centre for academic enterprise within the faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. Twenty-one members of staff are employed within the unit on a broad range of projects and programmes with team members working across Cumbria and Lancashire, as far a field as Carlisle, Ambleside, Lancaster, Preston and Blackburn.
The Unit is very successful in applications for funding and an enterprising culture is evident within the team. In addition to managing projects and delivering programmes the staff-members from the BCEU support College staff and students in the development of project ideas.
